I was given the opportunity to read and review Farsighted, the breakthrough YA novel by Emlyn Chand. What first caught my interest about this book was the narrator, Alex Kosmitoras, a blind teenager who discovers he has a gift of second sight. I knew writing from a blind person’s perspective would have to be a challenge, so I approached the book expecting to either find the narration lacking, or be blown away.
I’m happy to say that I was impressed. Emlyn managed to weave together his remaining senses in a way that more than compensated for Alex’s lack of sight. Instead of visual descriptions of the characters, we get details such as the Almond Joy scent of the love interest’s hair, and the Boston accent of Alex’ dad. And as the story unfolds, no detail is unimportant. Alex must learn how to tell apart what’s present and what’s a vision of the future, and how to control the visions that warn him of a threat to his friend Simmi’s life.
As he learns more about his ability, Alex meets people who will help him along the way: Miss Teak, the psychic next door; Simmi, a girl from India with a gift of her own; and Shapri, Miss Teak’s troubled daughter. Together they put the pieces together in order to prevent the worst from happening.
The story is fast-paced and believable. Even when Alex has a crisis of confidence and begins acting like a jerk, it all makes sense. This is a teenage boy, with all the flaws that come with that tumultuous age, with the best intentions not always producing the best results. But in the end, the main conflict is revealed and for the most part resolved, giving us a satisfactory conclusion but enough loose threads for a sequel I hope comes soon.
Yesterday I shared the first chapter of this book, which, if you missed it, you can find here.
