Having posted about an earlier novel by the author, The Gaia Wars, I was invited by Novel Publicity to read and review his latest novel, Exodus 2022.
The timing was kind of amusing to me because I had just signed on to review Good Sex, Great Prayers by Brandon Tietz, and the protagonists in both are priests. That’s as far as the similarity goes. This science fiction mystery delves into spirituality and our place in the universe, and reminded me, in a good way, of my favourite author in my teen years, Christopher Pike. This book, like so many of Pike’s, used science fiction to explore the larger themes, such as how much do we really know about this world and its creatures, and about the universe at large.
Set in the near future, there are only a few technological advances that come into play, and they’re all being used by insane mercenary commander Sheldon Beck to track Joe Stanton down and stop him from completing a world-changing mission Joe himself doesn’t understand.
Leading Joe is the consciousness of an orca who has sensed something changing in the water, a hope for all the creatures of the oceans to be saved from the pollution and death brought on by humanity. Time is running out, and psychic contact with the orca is slowly frying Joe’s brain. With the help of his girlfriend Ella, Joe agrees to help. His decision will change everything.
I read this cover to cover, unable to put it down. There was enough risk to the characters for me to get caught up in the urgency of it all. The ending was epic, though I will say while I don’t figure a sequel is needed, I’d love to see a story of what happens after this one ends. Two worlds have been changed forever, there could be so much to tell about them.
But whether there’s ever more to come or not, I really recommend this book to everyone.

About the book: Joe Stanton is in agony. Out of his mind over the death of his young daughter. Or so it seems. Unable to contain his grief, Joe loses control in public, screaming his daughter’s name and causing a huge scene at a hotel on San Juan Island in Washington State. Thing is, Joe Stanton doesn’t have a daughter. Never did. And when the authorities arrive they blame the 28-year-old’s outburst on drugs.
What they don’t yet know is that others up and down the Pacific coast—from the Bering Sea to the Puget Sound—are suffering identical, always fatal mental breakdowns.
With the help of his girlfriend—the woman he loves and dreams of marrying—Joe struggles to unravel the meaning of the hallucination destroying his mind. As the couple begins to perceive its significance—and Joe’s role in a looming global calamity—they must also outwit a billionaire weapons contractor bent on exploiting Joe’s newfound understanding of the cosmos, and outlast the time bomb ticking in Joe’s brain.
