If you want something done right…

You have to do it yourself.

Which is why I’m giving up on finding a WordPress –> LiveJournal automatic crossposter that works with the latest version of WordPress.

Not much to report on my end, so I will leave you with a couple of pictures.

Yes, I spent too much time staring at this.

Okay, I’m done wasting your time.

Canadian TV and Frank the Goat

In the 90’s, I watched a fair amount of Canadian-produced shows. These past few years I’ve kept up on BBC shows, but have lost track of what’s going on up north. Any of my Canadian friends want to fill me in on what shows are hot your side of the border?

I’m using Windows Live Writer – it came with my new netbook. It’s supposed to post directly to WordPress. And then WordPress is supposed to forward this to LiveJournal. We’ll see.

Starting to watch Season 4 of Stargate Atlantis and I am confused. Didn’t Woolsey take charge in Season 4? Or was it 5?

I found new pictures of Allison Scagliotti from Warehouse 13. All I can say is, I can haz?

The End Of Summer

It’s not all a bad thing. When you’re an adult you generally work year-round, so fall simply signifies a change of weather, and perhaps kids going back to school, which is universally considered a good thing by all the parents I know.

For me, I’m not sure if the change of weather is the cause of not, but fall brings about an increase in creative energy. For those of you who may remember a little site named elvenwolf.com, you may or may not have noticed that the site fell into some disrepair. I am currently in the process of correcting that. I’m giving the site a new layout and structure, but I’ll keep the background image and font type you’ve seen in the past. You’ll read it here when it’s completed.

Also, a few months ago I took over maintaining Tribal Forces‘ website, and I promised a members-only area where we could share files we don’t want public. I have not forgotten that promise. I am currently working on getting that set up.

And of course, still writing. Have almost reached the 70k-word mark on Gypsy Fiddle, and it finally begins to feel like it’s downhill from here. I know I want at least 30k more words, but things are starting to come together in a way that I can see the end, I can see the threads all beginning to weave together.

On a more personal note, I will be getting my passport this year, so all of you friends across the ocean, check your calendars for 2011, because the wolf is going on tour!

Gotta Love the Day Job

When I was a kid, I would write story after story and dream about being the next Anne Rice. (Don’t hate, back then she didn’t suck yet.) I had little desire to have a ‘regular’ job, so I wasted my time in Uni studying things I didn’t really care for, and things I did for no practical reason.

If I’d known then what I know now, I would have gone for the degree in Linguistics, since the degree I did get has not been used at all either. Might as well have learned things I really would feel better about myself knowing. But hindsight is 20/20 and I rather prefer Armand’s philosophy, that “we are to be powerful, beautiful, and without regret.”

So here I am, ten years later working as a billing rep for an insurance company. It’s miles away from the glamour I imagined as a kid. But since moving to the states I’ve made acquaintances in the writing business, and I’ve come to realize that there’s only a few Anne Rices and Neil Gaimans in the world. Most other authors in my genre have day jobs.

I’ve tried to leave Cubicle Purgatory before only to end up selling cars for three months. While there was a lot I enjoyed at that job (fun with co-workers, the ability to move around instead of being tied to a desk, driving fun cars) I actually hated the process of trying to talk people into going into debt for 6 years. Not because I didn’t believe in the product (I do drive the make I was selling), but because I don’t have that salesman personality.

But what really made the job difficult was the fact that I never really knew how much money I was going to bring home each week. And I suppose writing is the same, from what I’ve heard. It depends on advances, royalties, and blind luck. It’s taken a lot of soul-searching, but I don’t wish to live like that.

Which is not, in any way, shape or form, to be taken to mean that I will not be writing and publishing stories. I’m just okay with not quitting the day job anytime soon.

This feeling may be mostly inspired by a recent promotion in the Cubicle Farm, but hey, you take what you can get. Sometimes I think of being one of those old timers who’ve been working at my company for 30 years and I shudder. But part of me thinks, it wouldn’t be so bad. I hate starting over in new companies, and at least I’ve a decent gig with decent pay. What more can I ask for? I have a job.

In other news, check out my buddy Ingrid’s new work in progress, Rayne: The Third Seer and join the beta team!

Sorry, Sara

Trolling around the internet, I found something that amused me greatly. Perhaps the level of amusement can be blamed on having been sick all weekend knowing that I would have to go back to work today regardless. Or perhaps I’ve just had too much Earl Grey this morning.

Regardless, this one goes out to the Anderson Cooper fans in the audience. This was a comment thread on the Cheezburger network.

A new endeavour

An idea came into my head as I worked on my current project. This setting would make for a great d20 modern Role Playing Game!

Modeling this on Dungeons and Dragons, the system I am most familiar with, I’m rewriting the rules of magic altogether. I have four base races, specializations (classes), and the history for the setting.

The biggest change will be for the rules of magic, which I’m excited about, but not quite sure how the test group (my family) will adapt to the new rules.

I’m having fun using my characters from Gypsy Fiddle as NPC’s to explain the different rules. Now the real question is, will I finish the novel before I finish the game, or vice versa?

Pajama!

A few weeks ago I was drafted by a friend to take part in a little film project. The results can be seen below. All I can say is that I had a lot of fun doing it, and I surprised myself by not having a mental shutdown like I did when I tried acting in school. Have fun!

Watch more at Forever Wednesday.

Imma let you finish…

This is actually the most spot-on assessment of Anne Rice I’ve read recently.

So, if you haven’t heard, Anne Rice is making a big, fat, hairy deal of not being Xitian anymore…except she obviously still is. Whatever. Maybe her silly-ass Jesus books weren’t selling very well, and she’s feeling the heat from such literary giants as Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris. In case you missed the sarcasm there (after all, I did not end the sentence with “lol”), I will add that at least Rice did write three good books (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, and The Queen of the Damned) before drinking her own purple Kool-Aid and devolving into utter nonsense. Which is far more than can be said for Hamilton or Harris, who were pretty much purveyors of nonsense from Day One.

Sorry. Just needed to get that out of my system.
